Why do you ask for an area code with SMS?

When enabling SMS, we request the area code you want to use so we can provide a phone number that is local to your event and recognizable to your guests. We will only ask for the country code if your event is in the US or Canada, but it is optional—if you do not provide an area code we’ll randomly pick one from anywhere in the country.

The phone number will be a full length phone number similar to a mobile phone (length varies per country, but in the US and Canada it’s 10 digits). By using a full length phone number that’s dedicated to your event, any text message sent to the number we provide to be displayed on your wall. Your attendees will not need to include your hashtags or any special keywords.
