I tried to purchase, and it said “Your card does not support this type of purchase.” What does that mean?

There are several reasons why a payment might fail:

  1. PIN Requirement: Some debit cards require a PIN for transactions. If you’re using one of these cards, you’ll need to use an alternative card for your purchase.
  2. Cross-Border Restrictions: Cards issued outside the United States may have restrictions on international use. Contact your bank to check if this is the case and if they can lift the restriction.
  3. Category Restrictions: Certain cards, like corporate or FSA cards, may only be valid for specific business categories such as travel or healthcare. If this applies to you, consult with your employer to see if the restriction can be removed or consider using a personal credit card and requesting reimbursement.

The examples above will trigger a “Your card does not support this type of purchase.” message, but generally any declines—like you being over limit, your bank pausing it for fraud prevention, etc—will only tell us that “your card has been declined”, and not the actual reason for the decline.

There is no way for us to know the exact reason for a decline. In all cases we recommend contacting your bank to determine why and if there’s anything they can do on their end to allow it.
